KLP and the UN Sustainable Development Goals
Investments and cleaning products make a difference
In 2015, the UN Sustainable Development Goals were adopted by world leaders at the UN Summit in New York.
The goals came into effect on 1 January 2016 and like many other companies, we are working with the goals we can influence. Both at group level through investments and down to choosing Nordic Swan Ecolabelled cleaning products in individual properties.
In the end, the result is the sum of a lot of small actions that may not be so interesting or flashy individually, but together they make a difference.
The SDGs we work with
3. Good Health and Well-being
Research shows that the positive attributes of sustainability-centred buildings, such as improved lighting, better air quality and the use of plants, have proven positive effects on health and wellbeing. Avoiding substances that are harmful to health and the environment in materials that people interact with on a daily basis is important to ensure a good indoor climate and will help reduce the need for mechanical ventilation.
7. Affordable and Clean Energy
Reducing energy consumption is one of the most important focus areas when working with sustainability in property management. Reduced consumption and local, renewable production also increase the energy security of the property.
8. Decent Work and Economic Growth
The demand for properties where sustainability has a clear footprint in both operations and services is increasing. As a purchaser of goods and services, KLP has a responsibility to demand services that are not only sustainable, but also provided by socially responsible suppliers.
9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Buildings and infrastructure must be designed to be flexible and adaptable to climate change. Innovation and development of new technology will be important to drive the market forward.
11. Sustainable Cities and Communities
Increased migration to cities will require us to build densely and space-efficiently. To achieve this, it's necessary to look beyond individual properties to entire neighbourhoods when designing projects. Being conscious when planning infrastructure and accessibility will help to reduce the climate impact of properties on transport needs in a long-term perspective. Involving users, an active dialogue with authorities and other stakeholder organisations, and providing access to green spaces or other public facilities are other ways to contribute to more sustainable communities.
12. Responsible Consumption and Production
SDG 12 focuses on energy and resource efficiency. The property industry has an important role to play in reducing waste through recycling and reuse - the circular economy in action. At the same time, some resources that are important to the global community are becoming scarce.
Transparency about resource consumption in our properties, especially energy and water, can help raise awareness of resource use both within the organisation and among tenants and users.
13. Climate Action
30% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings. This is also one of the largest cost-effective potentials for emission reductions through energy efficiency. The energy efficiency target does not only apply to the operational phase. Energy consumption in the manufacture of building materials and the construction of properties are also major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and have the potential for significant reduction.
KLP Eiendom has a goal of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement.
15. Life On Land
Material selection is a key element when it comes to more sustainable properties. Choosing FSC-certified wood is one of the measures that are important to ensure increased sustainability.
Reducing water consumption, focusing on biodiversity with local species and ensuring biological values in construction projects are also important elements, both before, during and after construction.
17. Partnerships for the Goals
Strong local and international partnerships make us better equipped to work together towards achieving our goals. That is why KLP Ejendomme participates in industry organisations and forums for exchanging experience, such as ØICC and the City of Copenhagen's EnergiSpring, and we are open about our work processes and our results.
A prerequisite for achieving results is close co-operation with our tenants. To strengthen this collaboration, we have introduced Green Lease Agreements, and we want to collaborate on environmental certification of our properties.
