KLP and DGNB

DGNB is a certification for the sustainability of buildings and urban areas. It is an international standard adapted to Danish conditions. The Danish Council for Sustainable Building (formerly Green Building Council Denmark) is responsible for the certification.

The system is based on the holistic approach to sustainability (UN definition) with the three main pillars: social, economic and environmental quality. In addition, DGNB also has technical and process quality, totalling five main areas:

  1. Socio-cultural and functional quality

  1. Environmental quality

  1. Economic quality

  1. Technical quality

  1. Process quality

En holistic approach

The DGNB system is flexible and does not set specific requirements for certain solutions or materials, as buildings have different functions and different requirements. A building or urban neighbourhood is therefore evaluated based on its performance. Projects often have different focus areas, where higher scores are achieved in different qualities depending on the focus.

In the DGNB system, there must be a balance between the five overall qualities. All five have minimum requirements, so you can't excel in one area at the expense of another.

DGNB is a staircase certification system and therefore, depending on the level of ambition and type of certification, you can work towards being awarded from DGNB bronze up to DGNB platinum.

New buildings

There are several categories of certifications. For us, "New Buildings" and "Buildings in Operation" are the ones that are relevant. We've had two construction projects where the tool has been used as part of the management process, and both have produced great results - and properties.

Buildings in operation

DGNB for buildings in operation is designed to be a transformation and management tool that supports building owners, operators and users in developing a sustainable and action-orientated property strategy. By systematically evaluating information about building condition, usage situation and actual consumption data, the system helps to create transparency in building operations and identify optimisation potentials.
